Preface
This is the latest edition of the book I wrote ten years ago to help those who want to lose weight and keep it off forever. From the time I wrote this book until today, it has been my firm belief that the epidemic of obesity in our country is primarily caused by widespread misconceptions and misinformation about a balanced and healthy diet.
This book has received an unexpectedly warm reception. So far, its sales have exceeded ten million. This sales record is the highest for any health and diet book written in America in the last five years. In fact, in terms of sales, this book has always been at the top of its field. I am confident that among the millions who have read it, a vast number have not only achieved permanent weight loss by following its instructions but are now living healthier lives.
However, an important development that has emerged is the clear shift in the medical field's perspective on nutrition. Now, the Atkins Diet Revolution is celebrating its 10th anniversary in an environment that is much more favorable to low-carbohydrate diets. The opinions of medical experts are now beginning to reflect the scientific evidence that supports a controlled-carbohydrate nutritional understanding.
When I first wrote this book, the country's major and influential health organizations, due to a lack of accurate information, were irrationally afraid of fat, and the public also firmly believed that low-fat diets were healthier.
The general public considered sweet oatmeal for breakfast and bread, pasta, and buns in meals to be healthy because the American Heart Association had also put its stamp of approval on them. A fear of meat (red and white) had taken root in people's hearts. The low-fat craze that dominated Americans for two decades had significantly reduced the fat content in American diets, but at the same time, the excessive consumption of carbohydrate-rich foods became common. As a result of avoiding fat, instead of consuming more vegetables, people began consuming more refined carbohydrates, sugar, and flour, and these types of "junk foods" became a large part of the American diet.
I hope you will agree with me that if you want to create a nation of exhausted and sick individuals suffering from obesity, this could prove to be a complete dietary plan. Annual statistics were evidence of the continuous rise in obesity rates, and an even more frightening aspect was that the rate of diabetes patients was increasing worldwide. In this book, I will clearly show you that the other side of obesity is diabetes.
Both the obesity and diabetes epidemics were clearly the result of the low-fat, high-carbohydrate diets that the public was constantly being taught to follow. The same group that championed low-fat diets labeled low-carbohydrate diets as extremely harmful, which were actually the true solution to these two epidemics.
