Among contemporary philosophical movements, Existentialism is arguably the most misunderstood. One reason for this is its widespread popularity, and another is that it is generally attempted to be understood in a literary context rather than as a school of thought.
In its most limited formulation, Existentialism is a metaphysical theory that claims that the essence of an individual can only be determined after the manifestation of their existence. This theory declares the freedom of the individual.
Existential thought did not begin with Jean-Paul Sartre. The sources of this thought existed in philosophy and religion long before him, but the general popularity of Existentialism is, in any case, indebted to Sartre.
Here, an Urdu translation of Sartre's world-famous lecture L'EXISTENTIALISME EST UN HUMANISME is being presented. It has been translated into Urdu by Qazi Javed. Sartre delivered this lecture in 1945 at a club in Paris. In it, Existentialism is defended as a true theory of humanism. This lecture was first published in French in 1946. It was translated into English by Philip Mairet under the title "Existentialism and Humanism," which was published in America simply under the title "Existentialism." The Urdu translation is based on Mairet's English translation.
